Laparoscopy is used to look inside the abdomen and pelvis to help diagnose your problem. It may be used to find the cause of abdominal pain, or to see the spread of disease (including cancer), before deciding whether to do a major operation. If needed, biopsies can be taken. It is used when X-rays and ultrasound examinations are not sufficient.

Types of key-hole surgery can be performed through a laparoscope.
Your surgeon will discuss with you the reasons for your laparoscopy, and how it is to be done. Afterwards, your surgeon will discuss what has been found, and whether further surgery or treatment may be needed.
