You should see your doctor as soon as you notice anything unusual about your breasts - whether it be a lump, dimple, puckering, discharge from the nipple, or anything else that worries you at all.
It is important to be aware of your own breasts and what is normal for you; regularly checking yourself is important to help find any changes early. For more information on how to be breast aware, click here.
But breast screening can detect an abnormality long before it becomes noticeable to yourself. A mammogram (breast x-ray) is used in breast screening to look for any abnormalities that might indicate breast cancer.
The Department of Health & Social Security (DHSS) have introduced a call/recall breast screening programme where all ladies between the ages of 50 - 70 will be invited to attend for a mammogram every two years. If you are aged 71 or over and would like to have a mammogram, you can arrange this by contacting the screening service on telephone 01624 685339.
The appointments for the new service are being administrated for the DHSS by the Screening Unit of the University Hospital in Coventry.
If you are concerned about breast cancer, please contact your GP for advice.
