Before you start your radiotherapy, your treatment will need to be planned. All planning appointments take place at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology.

Mould room
You may need to wear a mask or shell during your radiotherapy, to keep you in the right position. If you need to have a mask or shell you will visit the mould room before your treatment begins.

Planning visits
Treatment may be planned on a machine called a simulator, that looks and moves like a treatment machine. The radiographers will help you to lie on the couch in your treatment position. The simulator will move around you without touching you and the radiographers will take measurements and x-rays. This information is used to produce your treatment plan. During this procedure you will need to lie still and breathe normally. This appointment can take up to one hour.

Treatment may also be planned by having a CT scan. This is a type of x-ray that creates detailed pictures of the inside of your body. The radiographers will help you to lie on the couch in your treatment position. You will pass through the open scanner but the machine will not touch you. The radiographers will take measurements and all of this information is used to make a treatment plan for you.

The radiographers will make some small permanent marks on your skin to show the treatment area. The radiographers use these marks to position you for treatment.

Before your treatment starts you may need to have a plan check. This is to check all the measurements are correct and take any extra x-rays, if needed.
