TBI Radiotherapy is given as part of the treatment for patients who have either leukaemia or lymphoma, and need a bone marrow transplant.

TBI Radiotherapy is the use of high energy x-rays to treat the whole body. The aim of the treatment is to prepare the body for the new cells.

You need to come for two visits to the radiotherapy department before your TBI can go ahead.

  • The first visit is for planning and consent.
  • The second visit is for a treatment test dose.

For the planning and consent visit, two weeks before treatment you will meet the doctor and a therapy radiogapher at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology to discuss the treatment and possible side effects. For patients from the Isle of Man, this usually means travelling across to the UK for the day.

You will be asked to sign a consent form to confirm that they wish to have the treatment. You will also sent for a CT scan to help with the planning process.

The second visit to Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology is for a treatment test dose. Your second visit is normally about one week after your first visit. For patients from the Isle of Man, this usually means travelling across to the UK for the day. The radiographer will give you a test dose of radiation in the treatment room to confirm the correct dose of radiation you need.

The process of having the test dose is the same as when you have your TBI treatment, however the test dose will only last about 20 seconds. For more information on what happens during TBI treatment, please click here.
