Aromatherapy is based on the healing properties of essential plant oils.

Essential oils are extracted from different parts of plants including flowers, leaves, seeds, roots, stem and bark. The oils all have their own individual chemical properties and aromatic scents. The essential oils are usually blended with a carrier oil, such as almond or sunflower oil, and used for gentle body massage.

However, essential oils can also be used in the bath, for inhalation or for cold compresses to the skin. Aromatherapists can advise you on the safe use of essential oils at home

Aromatherapy may help to relieve stress and tension, reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. It cannot cure cancer.

Safety

  • Oils should never be swallowed, or used undiluted on the skin.

  • Some oils should not be used on pregnant women.

  • On occasions massage and /or aromatherapy may not be recommended for some people with cancer. During the initial consultation the aromatherapist will advise you if this is the case, but if you have any concerns consult your doctor.

  • Your aromatherapist should ask you about your medical history, allergies and any medicines you are taking before giving you a treatment. The therapist will need to obtain the doctors consent before you have your aromatherapy treatment.

Training and standards

Aromatherapists who belong to a member organisation of the Aromatherapy Organisations Council (AOC) will have been trained to AOC standards.
