What is relaxation:

A state of relaxation can be brought about by working through a simple sequence of tensing and relaxing your muscles and slowing down your breathing. This can help to ease muscular tension, reduce anxiety and stress

How does relaxation work?

You will be guided through a relaxation programme by the therapist. Relaxation sessions can be in a group or one to one. Sometimes relaxing music is played. The relaxation programme may vary but the outcome is usually the same. As muscles relax and breathing becomes calmer you may experience a sense of deep rest.

Visualisation or guide imagery:

This involves creating a mental picture or image to help the mind take "time out" from everyday issues. Gentle guidance can be given to help create these mental pictures. Sometimes this is used within a relaxation session to help your mind rest. You can also use your imagination to help to relieve symptoms, cope with treatments and side effects.

Stress Management:

This involves identifying levels of stress and its effects on the body and then using some of the above techniques, including relaxation, guided imagery, meditation, breathing and simple exercise movements, to develop your own stress management plan. Coping strategies such as 'time out' delegation and assertion are also explored to encourage a balanced lifestyle.
