The most common one is blood in the urine (usually without any pain). The colour may vary from rusty brown to red, depending on the amount of blood. You may see the blood on some days and not on others. Sometimes, blood clots form.

In women, a little blood in the urine may be a sign of a urinary infection - but you should always see your GP if you notice it.

Less common symptoms of bladder cancer are:

  • it may hurt or feel uncomfortable when you pass urine (there may be no sign of infection)

  • you may feel the need to pass urine more often

  • you may keep getting urinary infections that aren’t cleared up by antibiotics.

Again, these may be signs of other problems, not cancer – but you should still see your GP.
