The following changes rarely occur, but you may notice…

Bladder changes
After radiotherapy, some patients will not be able to hold as much urine in their bladder as before. This may mean that you may need to go to the toilet more often. If this becomes a problem for you please tell your consultant or GP. They will be able to tell you about the help that may be available.

Radiotherapy to the bladder area may damage the bladder to the extent that it cannot heal or be repaired. In these cases a urostomy operation may need to be carried out.

Bowel changes
Some patients will have bowel movements more often. Ask for advice if you are troubled by it.

Some patients will have damage to their bowel following radiotherapy. This may result in you needing an operation to remove part of your bowel. A colostomy may also be necessary.

Changes to your fertility
If you are a woman having regular periods, radiotherapy to the pelvic area may cause your menopause to start within three or four months. If you have troublesome symptoms because of this, your doctor may suggest that you start hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

You may wish to discuss the prospect of becoming sterile, or unable to have children as a result of the radiotherapy with your treatment team.

If you notice any blood or mucous in your stools, please tell your consultant. She or he may need to arrange some tests to check on this.
