If a cervical screening test shows you have abnormal cells, you may need to go to the colposcopy clinic for some more tests. If these confirm pre-cancerous changes (CIN), you may be offered:

Observation
This is where the abnormal cells are monitored to see if the cells disappear on their own. This is only used for for pre-cancerous changes that are classed as mild.

Cold Coagulation
This is a treatment using a special type of heat to destroy the abnormal cells that have been detected on the cervix. This usually takes between 40 - 60 seconds. During the treatment you may be aware of a 'period type' ache, this usually only lasts while the treatment is being carried out.

Loop Excision
This treatment involves removing the abnormal cells detected on the cervix by using an electrically heated loop. This treatment usually takes about 10 minutes. Some patients experience slight discomfort similar to 'period  pains' during this treatment.

Your doctor will advise you which treatment is appropriate for you.
