Mouth cancer is a relatively rare type of cancer.
It is more common in people over the age of 50, and until recently has been more common in men than in women. This is because there is a link between smoking and mouth cancer, and historically the number of women who smoked was less. This trend in smoking has changed and the number of women diagnosed with mouth cancer is increasing.The male to female ratio has changed over a 50 year period from 5:1 to less than 2:1.
Your risk of developing mouth cancer is higher if
- you are a smoker
- you regularly drink too much alcohol
- you have a poor diet.
- you have oral lesions
