If you stop smoking and reduce the amount of alcohol you drink, you reduce your risk of oesophageal cancer.

A condition like Barrett's Oesophagus is a known risk factor. You will be advised to undergo screening to detect any abnormal changes as early as possible. This would be done by endoscopy The chances of cure are better if any abnormal changes can be detected as early as possible.

You may be able to cut your risk by eating healthy foods (such as fruit and vegetables). There are many booklets and websites that can give you tips on healthier eating - see our further information section for ideas.
