When thinking about your treatment, your doctors will take into account:

  • how big the cancer is

  • whether it has spread

  • how aggressive it seems to be

  • your age

  • your wishes.

Your doctors will tell you about the benefits, risks and side effects of the treatments being offered, and how they may affect your life afterwards.

You will then need to agree to the treatment before it can start. This is called giving your consent. Don't be afraid to ask questions if there is anything you don’t understand.

There are a number of new treatments currently going through clinical trials, to see if they work as well as the more commonly used treatments. These treatments include High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and Cryotherapy. For more information on these newer treatments click here. These treatments are available through specialist centres in the UK - your doctor can discuss these in more detail with you if you wish.
