This information is for women who are going to have radiotherapy to the pelvis, for a gynaecological cancer.

Your doctor will tell you about the benefits, risks and possible side effects of your treatment. They will ask you to sign a consent form to say that you agree to have radiotherapy.

The side effects you get will depend on:

  • the part of your body being treated
  • how much radiotherapy you are having (the dose)
  • your age and general health

Radiotherapy causes short and long term side effects. The short term side effects will only last during treatment and for a short while afterwards. The long term side effects may affect you for a longer period of time.

When you go to your treatment sessions please tell your radiographers or doctors about any side effects you are having. They may be able to help you feel better - by giving you advice or medicine, for instance.

You can read about the side effects your treatment may cause, and what you can do to help yourself to feel better…
