Many women ask whether it is OK to carry on with their normal sex life during treatment.
The answer is yes - it causes no harm, and will not make your cancer return, you cannot give your cancer to your partner.
You may, however, find that you don't feel much like having sex. This may be because you are sore, or because you are feeling low. If you need some help to cope with your feelings at this time, please let us know.
Radiotherapy can cause your vagina to be more dry inside and can also make it narrower and less elastic. Sex may become uncomfortable or difficult. It may also make having internal examinations more uncomfortable.
Your specialist nurse will discuss this issue with you. Having sex can help you to stretch your vagina and prevent some narrowing. If you still have difficulties after your treatment has finished, your nurse may advise you to use a device called a vaginal dilator. The dilator is a smooth plastic tube that gently stretches the tissues of the vagina. Your nurse will explain exactly how to use it. Some women use a dilator for a few months after treatment; others may need to use it for longer - everyone is different.
Do remember to continue to use contraception. Radiotherapy will not necessarily reduce your ability to become pregnant.
Remember that your specialist nurse has been trained to help you - please try not to feel embarrassed about discussing with her any sexual difficulties you may be having.
