For most people, life will return to normal. You will be given a telephone number for continuing support and advice from the Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist. You can contact the nurse if you are worried or there is anything you do not understand.

Follow-up
You will have an individual plan drawn up, taking into account your own and your GP’s wishes. Usually, you will need to have regular check-ups for two years. If you have had a high-risk SCC, you may be seen at a Specialist Clinic. If your SCC is uncomplicated, your follow-up may be handled by your GP.

Follow this general advice:

  • Examine the treated area every 4-6 weeks to check that the SCC has not returned.

  • Check your lymph glands nearest the area where your SCC has been removed for swelling. You will be told where to look.

  • Check the rest of your body for new skin growths, especially those parts most exposed to sunlight.

  • It is very important that you protect your skin from the sun. For information on protecting your skin, click here to go to the section 'can the risk of it be reduced?'

We have more on the after-effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Most of the unwanted side effects should go away gradually, once your course of treatment has ended.
