It would be impossible for us to describe all the benefits available, and who can claim them.
The benefits system can be complex and often changes. There are many other accurate, up-to-date and expert sources of advice available to you. (See Where can I get help and advice?)
The information below gives a general guide as to some of benefits that may be available…
- you are ill and can't work
You could claim Incapacity Benefit, or Income Support, depending on your circumstances. - you need help looking after yourself or getting around
You may be entitled to Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Attendance Allowance (AA). Children may also qualify for DLA. - your cancer has been caused by your job
You may be able to get Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit. It depends on the type of work you did, and you won't qualify if you were self-employed when the disease was caused. - you lose your hair while you are being treated
You may be able to get a free wig. - you are caring for someone who is ill or disabled
If you are over the age of 16 and spend 35 hours or more looking after the person, you are a full-time carer and may be able to get Carer's Allowance.
If you want to claim benefits, please remember…
- The sooner you apply, the better. Some benefits can't be backdated if you apply late.
- The benefits system is complex. There are many benefits available. Speak to someone who can give you advice on your particular circumstances, and help you to identify all the benefits you can claim. (see Where can I get help and advice?)
- Don't be put off applying for benefits because you think the system is too complicated, or the forms are too hard to fill in. You can get help to make sure you don't miss out.
