Hospice Isle of Man is a charity providing specialist palliative care for people diagnosed with cancer and other life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, and offers help to those people whose cancer may be cured.
The care is provided for both adults and children.
It consists of a number of different services ranging from:
- in-patients' beds
- day care in the day therapy unit
- palliative care advice and support offered by clinical nurse specialists both in hospitals and community
- hospice at home
- a wide range of complementary therapies
- lymphoedema service
- social worker support
- children's hospice (Rebecca House)
- counselling and bereavement service.
Hospice Isle of Man offers help to those people whose cancer may be cured but who need support when first diagnosed with their illness. In these circumstances, agreed programmes of care are offered for specific periods of time.
Hospice also offers respite and end-of-life care for patients and their families. This care is provided in the in-patient unit as well as in the community. All services provided are free of charge.
By providing education and training, in the principles and practice of palliative care, Hospice Isle of Man helps other professionals to adopt the palliative care approach in their own setting, e.g. in hospital, community or nursing home.
Referrals to the Hospice for any of the services it provides can be made through your GP, Hospital Doctors, Clinical Nurse Specialists and other health professionals. Self referrals can be made to access the children’s hospice, Rebecca House.
Hospice Isle of Man is a charity and although partly supported by the Isle of Man Department of Health, it needs to raise over £3.5 million each year to keep the service going. Hospice is supported in its work by an army of volunteers and new recruits are always needed and very welcome.
