About Lung Cancer Fund (Isle of Man):
Formed in 1991, the Lung Cancer Fund (Isle of Man) supports the work of its 'parent' charity, The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. This charity is the only national British charity dedicated to defeating lung cancer.
Roy Castle was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1992, despite never having smoked during his life. He was shocked to find that no-where in the world was there an organisation focused on beating the most common form of cancer which claims the lives of around 40,000 people each year in Britain.
Most of the recent fundraising by the Roy Castle Foundation and by the Lung Cancer Fund (Isle of Man) has been devoted to helping build the Roy Castle International Centre for Lung Cancer Research in Liverpool, which was opened in 1998. Research at the centre is focusing on :-
- Lowering the incidence of lung cancer;
- Improving diagnosis;
- Identifying early warning symptoms;
- and above all, finding a cure.
The Lung Cancer Fund (Isle of Man) has twice been awarded best support group at the Roy Castle Foundation annual award ceremony. It has raised approximately £500,000 since its formation but more is needed still.
Current members of the committee of the Lung Cancer Fund (Isle of Man) are as follows:-

Projects
The Lung Cancer Fund (Isle of Man) were one of the main fundraisers enabling the appointment of David Travis as the post of Cancer Lead in the Isle of Man. This was a commitment for two years and has resulted in the production of an Isle of Man Cancer Strategy Report.
The Roy Castle Foundation has provided expertise to the Isle of Man Government in helping the government determine its policy on smoking.
Lung Cancer Awareness - November
November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and the Lung Cancer Fund (Isle of Man) is once again running number of events to make people aware of this cancer and to raise funds for further research.
Lung cancer may not have the publicity given to some other cancers but the grim reality is that there are 38,000 new cases each year in the UK. Sadly it is one of the most common forms of cancer in the Isle of Man and one which affects men and women equally. Once it is diagnosed the survival rates are very low and that is why the Lung Cancer Fund (Isle of Man) has been working tirelessly to raise funds to go to researching the causes and cures of this terrible disease. Our parent organisation in the UK, The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, is set up to provide research and some good progress has been made but there is plenty more to do and hence the need for yet more funds for more research. If you would like to help to fight lung cancer, why not join the Lung Cancer Fund (Isle of Man) committee and devote some of your time to this. For more information, please contact Peter Vanderpump on 01624 832567.
