A diagnosis of cancer can have big emotional impact, on top of your physical concerns. For many people it can lead to a range of emotions, such as cause fear, anxiety, or sadness.

Often having someone to talk to about these concerns can help you to manage the emotions associated with a diagnosis of cancer. In this situation, some people find it helpful to talk to a counsellor about their feelings.

On the Isle of Man, we have a counselling service specifically for people affected by cancer. By a ‘person affected by cancer’ we mean:

  • Someone with a cancer diagnosis
  • Someone who has finished treatment for cancer
  • Someone who is a friend/relative/carer of someone with a cancer diagnosis

The service offers a series of free, confidential sessions. These can be in person, or over the phone.

You do not need a doctor’s referral to contact the counselling service – just telephone Manx Cancer Help on 679544.

The Counselling and Psycho-Oncology Service is based at Manx Cancer Help, Woodbourne Road, Douglas. There is a dedicated counselling room, giving a private, comfortable place for people to talk in confidence.

The Service can also see people at home, in Hospital, or in Hospice, as appropriate. Telephone counselling for people who are unable to travel or who are off island.

The Counselling and Psycho-Oncology Service employs both Counsellors and Psychologists to help people with the emotional difficulties associated with a cancer diagnosis. They work within guidelines from the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the Isle of Man Department of Health Mental Health Services.

The Service is funded by Manx Cancer Help and Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association.
