You may feel frightened, anxious or panicky. These emotions are understandable, but they will make the breathlessness worse.

You may try to breathe more quickly, and start to take shallower breaths. You may then feel even more breathless.

It may seem natural for you to start using your shoulders and upper chest muscles to help you breathe... but these are the muscles you use during heavy exercise, and they easily get tired. Using these muscles for breathing will add to your breathlessness.
