There are different options available to you if you do lose your hair. You will need to decide which option you will be the most comfortable during this time. Below are some of the options that you can choose...

You might like to wear a wig...

  • Modern wigs look natural and are comfortable to wear.
  • You should be able to choose from a wide range of colours and styles.
  • You might like to get your wig before you start your treatment, so that you can match it to your current style and colour. If you get it in advance, you will have time to get used to it before you lose your hair.

Patients from the Isle of Man who are having chemotherapy are entitled to one free wig. The chemotherapy nurses on the Oncology Day Care Suite at Noble's Hospital, can give you more information and assist you with ordering your wig.

Wigbank - donated wigs for sale and hire - a network being set up throughout the UK. Contact info@wigbank.com for further information.

You might like to cover up with some alternative headwear...

  • You could wear a hat, scarf or turban, for instance. Men and children often choose to wear baseball caps.

  • There are dozens of styles and fabrics to choose from.

  • Your headwear doesn’t have to be expensive. The Macmillan Cancer Information Centre has a list of companies that supply various types of headwear.

  • LookAhead is a service designed to support people affected by hair loss due to chemotherapy, showing them a range of hat styles available and different methods of tying a headscarf. For more information, click here.

You may prefer not to cover your head at all...

Some patients just shave their heads and don't worry about covering up!

Remember...

  • What you do is entirely up to you. Do whatever makes you feel most comfortable and confident.

  • You don’t have to decide straight away. You may like to try on some wigs or hats, for instance, before you make up your mind. A LookAhead appointment can give you some ideas as to what types of hats or scarf designs you may feel comfortable in.

  • You’re not alone. You’ll meet other patients who are losing some or all of their hair. It may help to talk with them and share your feelings.

  • If you have any questions or concerns about your hair, don’t be afraid to ask your nurse, doctor or radiographer. Our Macmillan Cancer Information Centre can also be of support.
