'Lymphoedema is the swelling of the limbs and body due to the accumulation of lymph'
(Lymphoedema Support Network, 2003)

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition and can occur following treatment for cancer. If the body's drainage routes through the lymphatic system become blocked or damaged (for example, by surgery), lymph fluid collects in the tissues and swelling occurs. If left untreated, lymphoedema can lead to changes such as hardness of the tissues and there is also an increased risk of infection.

There are two types of Lymphoedema:

  • Primary Lymphoedema - this is usually determined from birth, and arises from some failure of the lymphatic system.
  • Secondary Lymphoedema - this is usually arises from the influence of an external factor; such as an infection, inflammation, trauma or cancer and its treatments, which will affect the function of the lymphatic system.

Although the condition cannot be cured, there are a number of treatments that can be used to successfully reduce or control the swelling.

  • Skin Care
  • An exercise and healthy eating regime
  • Self-massage
  • Compression garments

There are further treatments available through the lymphoedema service at Hospice Isle of Man:

  • Manual lymphatic drainage
  • Mutli layered lymphodema bandaging

If you think you may have lymphoedema, please discuss it with your GP, Consultant, or Clinical Nurse Specialist. They can refer you to the Lymphoedema Service, provided by Hospice Isle of Man.
